BTS and Line & Lure Conditioner

I would like to announce the partnership between RMR Industries and myself for the 2009 season. RMR Industries is the parent company for BTS (Bow to Stern) and KVD's Line and Lure Conditioner. Bass Masters Classic 2009

Sorry that I have not posted in a while. My last tournament at Lake Texhoma did not go as planned, and I finished in 98th. I still finished the year ranked 25th in the world and am very excited to see what 2009 holds. Currently I am working on sponsor deals with some very big companies and I will let you guys be the first to know what happens.......

Bass Central Open---Kentucky Lake

I was so excited to fish this event. I have always wanted to go to Kentucky Lake and this year, the lake has been on fire. Every tournament this year had been taking 20 lb stringers to win and it was mostly power fishing, something I excel in.

Before the tournament, I really researched the lake and figured that the lake would fish both shallow and deep. I upgraded all of my crankbaits to deep divers, and made sure I had a great selection of 10" Berkley Power Worms on hand. For the shallow bite, I knew that the lake had a resurgence of grass and I was hoping for some great top water action with Berkley Bat Wing Frogs.

During the week, the deep bite became virtually nonexistent. There were millions of shad everywhere on the lake and you could catch 50 fish a day up shallow around the grass. The problem was that only 2-3 of those 50 would be keepers. I started working my way out to deeper water to try to find where the bigger fish were, and I found that they were holding on the scattered grass ledges that had deeper water close by. I could work the areas with a frog and also an Excaliber Swimmin Image when the fish were schooling. I also worked a Berkley Power Shakey Worm, 7" in the "General" color to catch fish on the edges of the grass.

The first day of the tournament started with a change in the weather with a strong north wind. This made the frog bite tough, but I managed a descent bag of 12lbs. The second day brought on an even stronger wind. The frog bite was dead, but the shakey worm bite turned on and I managed a 13lb bag. I made my second cut, in as many tournaments, in 17th place. The final day, the wind died down, but due to the Corps pulling water every day, the fish backed off and became very scattered. I could only catch 2 keepers and I fell to 25th overall. The two top 25th places that I secured have put me into 11th place overall in the points chase. I really need a top 5 at the Texohma event to secure a spot in the Bassmasters Classic. Any decent finish and I will secure a top 10 spot and a coveted invitation to fish the Bassmaster Elites.

Winning Pattern: The winner announced that he too was focusing on the scattered grass, but he had much deeper water close by. He was punching the grass with sweet beaver imitations.

Bass Central Open---Red River

Wow, what a week. The B.A.S.S Central Open started its year off with a bang. The event, held at the Red River in Bossier City, La. is also the site of the 2009 Bassmasters Classic.

The River greeted its anglers with high, cold, and muddy water. Most anglers who fished the Red were searching for the clearest water in the very back of the backwaters. As I approached the Red, I too had the same theory. During pre-tournament practice, however, all I found was a lot of pressured fish and a lot of tournament anglers. Most of the fish that I had found were post spawn and did not want anything to do with my lures. Looking at the situation, I decided that the cooler water closer to the main river may have some fish that have not yet spawned. I went into main a backwater area the was very close to the main river. The only thing that separated this area from the main river was a rock jetty and since the river was high, water was pouring into this area from several points. The backwater area had all the items needed for bass to spawn, shallow flats, deep water, stumps and plenty of sunlight. I figured that since the river had been high all spring, the bass would be use to the muddier than normal water.

As I approached the area, my main objective was to find a spot that had deep water close to the flat. The very first area that I graphed had a 5-9 foot channel that came right up to a 1.5 foot flat. I started fishing the area and immediately started getting bites from buck bass. I eventually narrowed down the area to the main drop and the very middle of the flat. The top middle of the flat had several fish still spawning on it, and the drop had most of the fish that already spawned and new fish that wanted to spawn grouped up on the stumps in 3-5 ft range. I could pick these fish off using a War Eagle Spinnerbait in the Fire Cracker Color. During the tournament, I moved up each day to make the cut in 30th place. On the final day, I struggled to get the bigger bites into the boat, but still managed to move up to 23rd place to start the year.

Looking back, I should have upgraded my line choice to 15lb. These Red River fish were extremely strong and I broke off several fish during the tournament. This won't happen again.

Winning Pattern: Billy led the tournament from start to finish while fishing much clearer water around cypress trees. He told the audience that the fish were spawning and he used a lizard to catch his fish.

Welcome to the www.scottypennington.com blog page. As the months grow nearer, I will bring all of my tournament action to the readers in this blog section. I will focus on all the aspects of the tournament itself, location, seasonal pattern, bait presentation, and I will fully discuss how I attacked the tournament. I will also try to bring the winning angler's tactics on how he won the tournament.

I am very excited about this blog, and I hope you will find it as fun and informative as I do. Please feel free to post comments and ask questions that pertain to the blog. Please keep all post's clean as I have two little kids and I want families to be able to get on here and not worry about seeing vulgar words and pornographic material.
